CFA Level 3 — Why It Trips Up Even Level 2 Passers
CFA Level 3 has two formats: constructed response (essay) in the morning and item sets in the afternoon. The essay section trips up most candidates — not because of knowledge gaps, but because of exam technique. Many Level 2 passers fail Level 3 because they answer essay questions like multiple-choice, writing too much without structure or writing too little without substance.
Level 3 Topic Weights 2026
| Topic | Weight | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Portfolio Management & Wealth Planning | 35-40% | High — IPS, behavioural finance, asset allocation |
| Fixed Income | 15-20% | High — liability-driven investing, yield curve strategies |
| Equities | 10-15% | Medium — active management, factor investing |
| Derivatives | 5-10% | High — options strategies, hedging with futures/swaps |
| Alternative Investments | 5-10% | Medium — PE, hedge funds, real assets in portfolio |
| Risk Management | 5-10% | Medium — VaR, stress testing, risk governance |
| Ethics | 10-15% | Medium — GIPS, Standards application |
Constructed Response (Essay) — The Key to Passing Level 3
1. Answer What Is Asked, Not What You Know
Essay questions have precise command words: calculate, explain, justify, describe, discuss, compare. Each requires a different response format. 'Calculate' needs a number with working. 'Justify' needs a conclusion with reasoning. 'Explain' needs a mechanism. Many candidates write explanations when asked to calculate — and get zero marks.
2. Use the Line Space as a Guide
The number of lines provided for each answer signals the expected length. A 4-line answer space needs 3-4 lines of direct, structured response — not one vague sentence and not a full paragraph of tangential content.
3. Lead With Your Conclusion
For 'justify' and 'recommend' questions: state your conclusion first, then provide the supporting reasoning. Examiners are reading hundreds of papers — they award marks for the direct answer, not the preamble.
4. Do Not Leave Blanks
Unlike multiple choice, partial credit is available in the essay section. A partially correct answer earns marks. A blank earns zero. Even if uncertain, write your best attempt using the relevant framework.
Must-Know Topics for Level 3
- IPS (Investment Policy Statement): Objectives, constraints, RRTTLLU — this appears every year
- Behavioural finance: Cognitive vs emotional biases, adviser vs adaptor approach
- Asset allocation: MVO, Black-Litterman, liability-relative, goals-based
- GIPS: Composite construction, verification, performance standards — tested in essay
Afternoon Item Sets — Don't Neglect These
Many candidates over-prepare for the essay section and underperform in the afternoon item sets. The afternoon format is identical to Level 2 vignettes. Target 70%+ on item sets — they are your score buffer if the morning essay goes poorly.
