CFA Level I pass rate — global data 2024–2025
CFA Institute publishes global pass rates annually. The most recent data (2024–2025 sitting averages):
| Level | Pass Rate Range | 2024 Average |
|---|---|---|
| Level I | 39–44% | ~41% |
| Level II | 45–52% | ~48% |
| Level III | 52–56% | ~54% |
CFA Institute does not publish country-specific pass rates. The global Level I pass rate of ~41% means roughly 6 out of 10 candidates fail their first attempt.
India-specific pass rate — what we know
India-specific CFA pass rate data is not officially published, but based on industry estimates and coaching provider data, Indian candidates appear to slightly outperform the global average — estimated at 42–50% for Level I. This is likely because:
- India's CFA candidate pool skews toward finance professionals (BFSI, CA background) rather than students
- Indian candidates in finance-adjacent roles have stronger FSA and Equity foundation from professional experience
- High concentration of CFA coaching infrastructure in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore compared to many other regions
Why do candidates fail CFA Level I?
Based on CFA Institute research and coaching provider data, the most common failure reasons are:
- Insufficient study hours: Candidates who study under 250 hours have a failure rate above 80%. The 300-hour minimum is not a guideline — it's a floor.
- Skipping Ethics: Ethics is 15–20% of the exam and the most learnable topic. Candidates who underweight Ethics lose 3–4% of their potential score unnecessarily.
- Ignoring FSA: Financial Statement Analysis (13–17%) is the hardest topic for non-commerce backgrounds. Many engineering candidates underestimate how deep FSA goes.
- No mock exams under timed conditions: Knowing the material and performing under 270-minute exam pressure are different skills. Candidates who skip mock exams frequently fail on time management alone.
- Starting too late: Registering 2–3 months before the exam and trying to compress 300 hours into 60 days. This doesn't work for most people.
- Over-indexing on low-weight topics: Spending 60+ hours on Derivatives (5–8%) while neglecting FSA (13–17%). Classic misallocation of study time.
How to beat the pass rate — actionable plan
- Study 300–350 hours minimum: 2 hours/day for 5 months. Non-negotiable.
- Prioritise by weight: Ethics + FSA = 30–37% of exam. Master these first.
- Do 3+ full timed mock exams: CFA Institute provides 2 included mocks. Buy Schweser Practice Exams for a third.
- Start 5–6 months before exam day: This allows buffer time if you fall behind schedule.
- EOC questions after every reading: Don't just read — answer every end-of-chapter question before moving on.
- Register for early window: Gives you 6+ months to prepare AND saves ₹25,700 on registration fee.
What happens if you fail?
Failing CFA Level I is common — 59% of candidates fail globally. You can re-register for any subsequent exam window. There is no limit on the number of attempts. Most candidates who fail and re-sit with better preparation pass on their second attempt. The key is diagnosing why you failed (CFA Institute provides a performance report by topic area) and addressing specific weak areas rather than re-studying everything from scratch.
